Clermont, FL – Clermont Periodontics and Implant Center had the joy of turning a regular school day into a memorable moment for more than 100 first graders! Dr. Kerwin Scott—affectionately known as “Your Dentist’s Favorite Periodontist”—stepped away from the clinic and into the school auditorium for a fun-filled morning of education, storytelling, and movement.

The event kicked off with Dr. Scott’s signature enthusiasm as he greeted the crowd and asked,
“Who knows what a periodontist is?”
Hands shot up, and curiosity filled the room. Dr. Scott explained that a periodontist is a dental specialist who helps people care for their gums—the foundation of a healthy smile. He shared that just like there are many types of doctors, there are different kinds of dentists, too—and each plays a vital role in keeping us healthy from head to toe.

Then came a special storytime moment. Dr. Scott read “Determined to Be a Doctor Someday” by Dr. Christina Rosenthal, an inspiring picture book that encourages children to dream big and pursue careers in healthcare. As the story unfolded, students were captivated by the message: you can become anything you set your mind to.

After storytime, the energy went up a notch as the students met Tony the Tooth, a friendly tooth character who reminded everyone to brush and floss daily. But this wasn’t your average health talk—a dance party with a purpose!

Dr. Scott taught the students a fun “brushing dance” to accompany the catchy song. As the music played, the auditorium came alive with laughter and movement. Every time the song said “brush,” the kids mimicked brushing their teeth with dance moves. And when it was time to “floss,” they showed off their best floss dance skills—some with serious flair!

Five bold student volunteers were invited to dance on stage with Dr. Scott and Tony the Tooth. They rocked the spotlight and received gifts for their participation. Adding to the joy, Dr. Scott’s own son joined the fun, proving that dental health is truly a family affair.

1. Gum Inflammation or Bleeding

If a child’s gums are red, swollen, or bleed when brushing or flossing, it could be an early sign of gingivitis—the first stage of gum disease. A periodontist can evaluate the issue and provide treatment before it becomes more serious.

2. Excess Gum Tissue (Gum Overgrowth)

Some children experience gum overgrowth due to braces, certain medications (like anti-seizure medications), or genetic conditions. A periodontist can remove the excess tissue and help restore a healthy gum line.

3. Tongue-Tie or Lip-Tie (Frenectomy)

If a child has difficulty speaking, eating, or nursing due to a tight piece of tissue under the tongue or upper lip, a periodontist may perform a simple surgical procedure called a frenectomy to correct it.
