CLERMONT, FL – When a patient walks out of our surgical suite at Clermont Periodontics & Implant Center, that moment matters. There’s a mix of emotions — relief that the procedure is complete, curiosity about what healing will feel like, and sometimes a little nervousness about what happens next.

We know that feeling.

And that’s exactly why we hand every surgical patient a carefully prepared post-operative bag before they leave. Inside, you’ll find four things: our Clermont Perio Post-Op brochure, an ice pack, a tea bag, and sterile gauze. Each one serves a purpose.

Your Guide to Healing

The first item in the bag is our printed guide titled “Your Guide to Healing: Post-Operative Care Instructions.” It walks you through what to expect during the first 24–48 hours, how to manage discomfort, how to control bleeding, what to eat, when to brush, and when to call us. Healing can feel uncertain if you don’t know what’s normal. Mild swelling, light bleeding, and tenderness are expected in the first couple of days. Our guide outlines these details clearly so you’re never left wondering if something is wrong. It also includes simple instructions like biting gently on gauze for 30–60 minutes to help control bleeding and applying an ice pack in 15-minute intervals during the first day. We include this brochure because written guidance matters. When you get home, you shouldn’t have to rely on memory alone. Everything you need is already in your hands.

The Ice Pack

Swelling is part of the body’s natural healing response. Rather than leaving you to search your freezer when you get home, we place an ice pack directly in your post-op bag so you can begin right away. Using cold therapy in short intervals during the first 24 hours helps manage that early inflammation and keeps recovery more comfortable. It’s a small detail — but small details make a difference.

The Tea Bag

This one surprises people. A simple black tea bag contains tannins, which can help encourage clot formation. If minor bleeding continues after surgery, gently biting on a damp tea bag can help stabilize the area. It’s a traditional, practical remedy that has stood the test of time — and we like giving patients tools that are both simple and effective.

The Sterile Gauze

After many periodontal and implant procedures, gauze plays an important role in the first hour of healing. Applying gentle pressure allows the blood clot to form and protect the surgical site. We include sterile gauze so you have exactly what you need — no substitutions, no guesswork. Proper clot formation is the foundation of healing, especially after extractions or grafting procedures.

More Than a Bag

Our post-op bag isn’t elaborate. It isn’t complicated. But it reflects how we approach care. Surgery doesn’t end when you leave our office. Healing continues at home, and we want you to feel supported in that space too. Dr. Kerwin Scott often reminds patients, “We’re here to support you every step of the way.” That includes the hours and days after your procedure — not just the time in the chair.
