CLERMONT, FL – Most people are familiar with what a dental hygienist does in a general dental office—but in a periodontal and implant specialty practice, the role expands significantly. At Clermont Periodontics & Implant Center, our hygienist supports advanced periodontal therapy, surgical care, patient education, and community learning in a way that enhances every step of the patient experience.

This advanced position is known as a Surgical Dental Hygienist.

Here’s what makes this role unique and why it matters in a periodontal practice.

A Specialized Hygienist for a Specialized Practice

Working in a periodontal office means providing care for patients who often have moderate to severe gum disease, bone loss, or complex implant needs. The Surgical Dental Hygienist works closely with Dr. Kerwin Scott to support periodontal therapy, assist with surgical workflows, and help patients understand how to protect their long-term oral health.

1. Expertise in Periodontal Care

Unlike routine dental cleanings, periodontal therapy requires deeper knowledge and advanced clinical skill.
Our Surgical Dental Hygienist performs:

  • Full periodontal charting and probing

  • Scaling and root planing (SRP)

  • Periodontal maintenance and debridement

  • Implant maintenance and peri-implant evaluations

  • Pre- and post-surgical assessments

  • Suture checks and healing evaluations

  • Radiographs and intraoral photographs

  • Assistance with CBCT imaging

This expertise helps us track disease progression, stabilize gum health, and ensure successful surgical outcomes.

2. Support for Surgical Procedures

Because Clermont Perio is a surgical practice, hygiene and surgery work side by side.

The Surgical Dental Hygienist assists with:

  • Preparing patients for grafting, implants, and extractions

  • Reviewing medical histories and identifying risk factors

  • Supporting sedation appointments

  • Providing detailed post-operative instructions

  • Monitoring healing at follow-up visits

This collaboration helps create a seamless, supportive environment for patients undergoing advanced treatment.

3. Patient Education That Empowers

Many patients seek periodontal care because they are worried about gum disease, tooth loss, or chronic infections. Education plays a major role in helping them feel confident and informed.

The Surgical Dental Hygienist provides guidance on:

  • How periodontal disease develops

  • How gum health affects overall health

  • Proper brushing, flossing, and homecare techniques

  • Post-surgical expectations and healing timelines

  • Maintenance visits to protect their long-term results

This clarity helps patients take an active role in their periodontal health.

4. Detailed Documentation & Technology Integration

Accurate and consistent documentation is essential in specialty care. Our hygienist documents clinical findings in Open Dental and Kasper, assists with imaging, and ensures that case details are communicated clearly to Dr. Scott and the surgical team.

This precision keeps treatment plans organized, efficient, and aligned with best practices.

5. Leadership in the Clermont Perio Dental Hygiene Study Club

A standout part of the role is helping organize and manage our Dental Hygiene Study Club, a continuing education program for local hygienists and referring offices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating meeting dates and topics

  • Preparing CE materials

  • Sending invitations and managing RSVPs

  • Overseeing event setup and check-in

  • Maintaining attendance and CE documentation

  • Supporting Dr. Scott during presentations

This initiative helps strengthen relationships with local dental teams and contributes to elevating periodontal knowledge in the community.

A Role Built for Growth, Learning, and Patient Impact

The Surgical Dental Hygienist at Clermont Perio blends clinical expertise, patient support, and professional leadership. It’s a rewarding role for hygienists who want to deepen their knowledge of periodontal disease, collaborate in a surgical setting, and contribute to community education.
